I have to admit I haven't followed this entire thread that closely, and I
can't remember what dist. you said you were using. Is it possible that you
have

ALL: ALL

in /etc/hosts.deny?

If so, the Linux box will not allow any connections from anywhere. Feel free
to ignore this entire post if I'm reiterating someone else's suggestion or
are otherwise out to lunch. :-)
