You don't sound like you are very security conscious [yet]. If you do this - you will be in violation of you AUP on MediaOne, or Charter and you WILL be hacked in short order. Whoever hacks you will certainly do something to get notice of people you don't want to notice you :) Get DSL and a good firewall book.
