I guess I haven't been following the thread very closely, but have you tried looking at root's crontab? Run crontab -e as root and see what's there. Also, if this is RedHat, look at the cronjobs in /etc/cron.{hourly|daily|weekly|monthly} and see if there is anything weird in those.
