Could be dropped packets, which can pretty much stop a connection cold for
a while (usually a few minutes).  Try running ping for a while (ten
minutes or something).

I'm not exactly sure what the best way to fix this would be, but I think
there are some tunable parameters for TCP retransmission times in
/proc/sys/net/ipv4
