I don't think that's it, but am not sure.  Multi-session discs stink,
but for reasons that shouldn't have anything any bearing at the OS
level.  (Actually, I admit that statement carries a fair amount of
professional bias.  Personally, if they work, they work.)

I believe that photo discs aren't ISO-9660, but a variant -- or
deviant! -- thereof.
