Just a couple of thoughts...

What if you try to kill the X Server with a CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE,
or try to get to one of the full screen terminals on CTRL-ALT-F1?
(or try all the function keys as I don't remember what Deb uses as a
full screen terminal while in X).
