First thing that comes to mind - the audio cable that is supposed to go from the cd-rom/burner/DVD to your sound card. If it is there, try reversing the cable at either end. Any chance the box dual-boots and you can test in WinBlows? Just tested on my RedHat 7.2 install with SB Live! Works like a charm. Hope this helps.
