Unfortunately, it is not yet perfect. Last I heard, there is no DMA access through the SCSI emulation mode. This is OK for CD writing, but it is not so good when you want to read from the same drive. Depending how you compile your kernel, changing between SCSI emulation and real IDE/ATAPI access (for writes and reads respectively) might require a reboot after a configuration change (again - depends on how you have built the kernel and passed it parameters).
