Although you can download from pop, imap, ... with mutt, you generally won't want to. By running fetchmail and filtering through procmail you can delete anything you don't want before you ever run mutt. You could use procmail to send large messages directly to /dev/null so you don't risk running out of space. Then you can run mutt on one of the mailboxes that contains only messages you want. Once you get to know mutt you can greatly increase your e-mailing efficiency. Otherwise, if you just want to delete a message off the server (if its pop3) you can telnet to port 110, type USER <yourusername> <enter>, PASS <yourpassword> <enter>, LIST <enter>, this will list the messages by an index no. with a size.
