You're kind of answering your own questions, I think.  I think you said
you had a simple 100Mb Ethernet switch, right?  I'd make sure the cables
are working right.  Perhaps try connecting the two machines together
with a crossover cable.  You might also want to try changing the ports
you're using on the switch.  Some of them might be faulty.
