Some BIOSes have a few different modes available for accessing the
disk.  You might want to try setting this to the various possible values
(though be careful -- if I recall correctly, changing this is sometimes
a destructive action, but maybe I'm thinking of something from a long
time ago).

If that doesn't work, you'll need to hunt for a boot disk of some kind. 
Just getting GRUB loaded on a floppy might be enough if you know how to
navigate it properly.  That would allow you to boot up the system and
re-install the bootloader (I think you could theoretically do this just
with the floppy, but I wouldn't really advise it)
