You may want to grep dmesg and see what it found during boot up.
Something along the lines of:
dmesg|grep hd
should be sufficient to see what linux found for /dev/hd* stuff.  This
of course assumes it is IDE, if you are using scsi you will want to look
for sd instead of hd.  Also, double check you cables and jumpers.
