Thanks Tom for the information you provided. I have a basic question
here. What is the difference between Blackdown Java and Sun Java? Which
would one prefer and why? I just want to know this as I am not clear
about this. Is there any link that answers my questions?

FYI Sun will release J2SE 1.4.2 really soon (probably tomorrow!)
which includes lots of good stuff, including two notable
improvements on Linux:
- threading performance improvements (fix in the JVM)
- NPTL support (RedHat backported this to RH 9)

You will be able to get it from the usual spot...
   http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

or the new "consumer" oriented site at
   http://java.com

FFI please see:
1.4.2 Performance Whitepaper

Tuning Garbage Collection with the 1.4.2 Java Virtual Machine
(there are parallel and concurrent collectors as of 1.4.1!!!)
