It's been a long time since I did anything like this, but when I did,
I used the automounter to get the share mounted.  This wasn't ideal
(required hard-coding Windows namespace user and password into the
automounter conf file), but seemed to be best option available.  Then
the automounter with -t smbfs seemed to do a good job of keeping the
handles from being stale, etc.
