Distros like LEAF (leaf.sourceforge.net) load the filesystem into memory
like that. It's not for a speed increase, but more for the benefit of
loading the OS off of a read-only source, either floppy or CD. Then if the
system is cracked a reboot will restore it to the original clean state.
Also, less energy should be required as you can spin down the floppy or cd drive
once you're done booting.
