I've been using RH8 to FC1 all with "vanilla" kernels because I 
usually want something the distro kernel didn't have.  USB, Better 
ACPI support etc...

No serious problems to date.  You get some complaints from the init 
scripts during boot if you compile in support instead of making 
modules but everything has worked.

Actually I'd recommend compiling in support for your devices because 
sometimes the module names change slightly and the init scripts will 
still error and the module won't be loaded.  It's easier than 
debugging the init scripts.
