well, it could be any number of things.

In my experience, hard drives do fail. especially when subjected to any 
of the following:

overclocking
overheating
inadiquate grounding
power fluctuations
dirty environment
time (duh)

I kind of doubt it was your filesystem unless it is really experimental 
or otherwise had some goofy options set.

You might want to take a look at your kernel configuration and your 
fstab file just to make sure.

As was already stated in this thread, you should run some diagnostics on 
your hard drive (probably in another machine, on a known good 
controller) to make sure that it is, indeed the drive.

In addition to open source diagnostics, the drive manufacturer probably 
has a dos-type utility on their site that you can download.
