It's my understanding that it's frowned upon to build the kernel as
root; instead you should build it as a non-root user.  So you should
build it in your local user directory.

I see that the debian docs do indeed show building as root in /usr/src:

As far as *putting* it in /usr/src, since that's where apt-get puts it,
I doubt it will cause problems on a debian system.
