Another way to go with this is to use a camcorder.  If you have
access to a camcorder with firewire or USB out and RCA inputs (or
whatever you need to connect to your VCR), then you can connect
your VCR to the camcorder, and the firewire/USB to the computer.

I have done it this way, and it works nicely, and you avoid
having to buy a capture card.  Of course capture cards are
cheaper than camcorders, so this might not be any help ;).
