I don't use Ubuntu, but I assume it uses Grub. You can have Grub use 
UUIDs, that's actually what I do.

title  distro
root   (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26-bfs 
root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/fdgsfdg-gre-491c-gegre-gregrege quiet vga=773 
resume=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/kernel26-bfs.img
