ESXi supports less hardware than ESX. If you don't have licenses to 
spare, this means you're a bit out of luck and have to go with the free 
version which is only limited to ESXi.

You may be able to save some money by going with tower servers instead 
of rack mounted ones. Dell typically has great deals on them.

No experience with this server model, but you might want to look into 
ESX\ESXi version 2 although you may not be able to get licenses for it. 
Another option is the hosted VMware Server which runs in Windows or 
Linux as it will more likely support your hardware.
