It's a dedicated RAID array box, also known as a SATA multiplier really.

Let me put it this way - had no problems at all mkfs/badblocking all the 
drives, so I doubt it. I'm seeing no errors during run, and I do hear them 
all spin up and all te LEDs light up when they're supposed to.
