I think Matthew's point was FCC part 15 certification, or
lack thereof in anything modified after purchase (where
modification can be interpreted as adding a 3rd party
antenna) - which is a rat-hole I don't intend to get sucked
down. Correct me if I'm wrong, Matthew.

The "turn the wick down 1dB for every 3dB of antenna gain" rule
applies to point-to-point links. The point-to-multipoint rule is
1dB for every 1dB of antenna gain. Makes sense if you look
at it from a spatial-reuse-of-spectrum standpoint, it's
an incentive to use point-to-point links and highly
directional antennae.
