This effort is called WarDriving. In order to successfully WarDrive there are hardware and software tools required. This book covers those tools, along with cost estimates and recommendations. Since there are hundreds of possible configurations that can be used for WarDriving, some of the most popular are presented to help readers decide what to buy for their own WarDriving setup. Many of the tools that a WarDriver uses are the same tools that could be used by an attacker to gain unauthorized access to a wireless network. Since this is not the goal of a WarDriver, the methodology that users can use to ethically WarDrive is presented. In addition, complete coverage of WarDriving applications, such as NetStumbler, MiniStumbler, and Kismet, are covered. http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/1931836035/ ================================================ Upcoming Events ================================================ ***For more events, please see: http://events.oreilly.com/ ***Matthew Gast ("802.11 Wireless Networks: The Definitive Guide" & "Network Printing") Networld+Interop--May 9-14 Matthew presents his LAN Access Security--Wireless and Wired class for the Interop Labs this year in Las Vegas, NV. No thanks. well you can blame part of that on a strong euro. ;-) the balance of that doesn't seem too horribly out of whack. if you consider that a wrt54g only has a single radio in it, doesn't support PoE and doesn't have quite the same level of horsepower with a street price of roughly $100-120. $200 doesn't seem too bad. plus the case is pretty cool. { snipped - misc .signatures } -- steve ulrich sulrich@botwerks.org PGP: 8D0B 0EE9 E700 A6CF ABA7 AE5F 4FD4 07C9 133B FAFC _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From chrome at real-time.com Thu May 6 00:47:06 2004 From: chrome at real-time.com (Carl Wilhelm Soderstrom) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:28 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] little linux AP box In-Reply-To: <20040506043212.GA1720@botwerks.org>; from sulrich@botwerks.org on Wed, May 05, 2004 at 11:32:12PM -0500 References: <20040505093024.A28688@real-time.com> <20040506043212.GA1720@botwerks.org> Message-ID: <20040506004706.J15303@real-time.com> On 05/05 11:32 , steve ulrich wrote: > > > http://meshcube.org/english/specs.html > > $200 for a kit and $240 assembled? No, it's not a direct replacement for your off-the-BestBuy-shelf AP; but if for some reason you need more versatility; the USB and *multiple* mini-PCI interfaces offer a lot. You can add on SCSI cards, VGA cards, crypto accellerators, keyboards, more Ethernet interfaces... you name it. I might not have a need for a small, solid-state AP with a keyboard interface and a VGA display; but I'll bet you *somebody* does, and they might be willing to spend a few bucks extra to get it. :) Carl Soderstrom. -- Systems Administrator Real-Time Enterprises www.real-time.com _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From kaze0010 at umn.edu Thu May 6 11:25:55 2004 From: kaze0010 at umn.edu (Haudy Kazemi) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:28 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] little linux AP box Message-ID: <200405061625.i46GPtVX013831@qix.software.umn.edu> On 6 May 2004, Carl Wilhelm Soderstrom wrote: > On 05/05 11:32 , steve ulrich wrote: > > > > http://meshcube.org/english/specs.html > > > > $200 for a kit and $240 assembled? Pricewise it's close to the how much two WRT54GSs would cost. It looks like it competes more closely with the Soekris gear (but on a MIPS vs. x86 platform). _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From sulrich at botwerks.org Sat May 8 10:06:48 2004 From: sulrich at botwerks.org (steve ulrich) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:28 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] OT - home networking annoyances Message-ID: <20040508150648.GA1561@botwerks.org> i haven't been forwarding these as a matter of course but this is only slightly off-topic and provides a venue for folks to put forth queries and tips. i thought the attached might be of interest to folks, given the nature of some of the questions that seem to pop up on this list. it would seem that the folks over at ORA are putting together another "annoyances" book. this time focused on home networking annoyances. i can't say as i've ever perused one of these books but i have to admire the candor of the title(s). they're soliciting input on the book, so feel free to drop them a line and vent a spleen or provide a tip. -- steve ulrich sulrich@botwerks.org PGP: 8D0B 0EE9 E700 A6CF ABA7 AE5F 4FD4 07C9 133B FAFC -------------- next part -------------- Dear User Group Leader: Once again, I must say thanks for the great response to our previous calls for annoyances, gripes, and complaints about Excel, and the Internet, and other topics. The email we received was useful and gave our Annoyances books a great head start. As you might guess, we have yet another book in the wings--this one focusing on home networking annoyances. Everything from cabling hassles to setting up a router to wireless access points to fussing with TCP/IP settings to installing a shared printer. Whether you've set up a wired (Ethernet, phoneline, or powerline) or wireless (802.11a, b, or g) network, merely shared a DSL line, or networked a bunch of PCs and Macs, feel free to share the annoyances you've encountered along the way. If you or any members of your group have home networking annoyances you'd like to see solved, email marsee@oreilly.com with "Home Networking Annoyances" in the subject line. Please note what hardware, software, and/or service is giving you grief (e.g.: a LinkSys Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port Switch, SMC's EtherPower II network cards, SBC DSL, Windows XP, etc.). As thanks for sharing, we'll make sure to get copies of "Home Networking Annoyances" sent to your group shortly after publication. --Marsee *** An example: The Annoyance: I added a new computer to my network, but it doesn't appear in My Network Places or Network Neighborhood on any of the other computers. The Windows help files tell you to reboot all the other computers on the network in order to see the new computer, but there's got to be a better way! The Fix: There is. Assuming your hardware connections are working, and you've created at least one shared resource on the new computer, you don't have to reboot the rest of the network to see the new computer. Wait twelve minutes. Honest. Could I make that up? Get a cup of coffee, empty the dishwasher, or change all the burned out light bulbs in the house. Then open the network folder again, or press F5 to refresh the display if you didn't close the folder. You should now see the new computer. Why does this happen? The icons in the network folders (My Network Places and Network Neighborhood) are controlled by a service called the Computer Browser Service, which browses the network, peers down the pipes (including the virtual pipes of wireless connections), and checks to see who's on board. In a peer-to-peer network, the computers elect one of their own as a browser master using a complicated scheme that involves a private conversation among the computers (held secretly so you aren't aware of it and can't control or interfere with it). The browser master runs the browser service every twelve minutes, and populates the network folders of all computers on the network with icons representing the computers it finds. *** -------------- next part -------------- _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From nkras at visi.com Sat May 8 17:03:07 2004 From: nkras at visi.com (Neal Krasnoff) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:28 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Volunteer needed Message-ID: I need a volunteer with a laptop with an wifi card and 'Stumbler for a coverage test tomorrow (that's Sunday) in Loring Park. My aluminum PowerBook is attenuating the signal to the internal card - a survey should be conducted with an external card. Most of the problems are scattering of waves by foliage, but I was surprised with signal levels at specific areas of the Park. The Utne repeater doesn't add much in the way of coverage until you get to the Garden area: it is a clear line of sight to the panel antenna. Increasing the gain at Utne will provide further increases in coverage at the Garden. With my limited test, the area of fair to good signal includes the north shore of the Loring Pond, the Gardens, the east side of the Upper Pond to Harmon Place, the Tennis Courts, then south to the north shore of Loring Pond. We'll probably have to go with 19 dbi parabolic grids at MCTC, but let's see how the 14 dbi panels work. -- Neal: nkras at visi dot com http://www.visi.com/~nkras http://vui.blogspot.com/ _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From nkras at visi.com Wed May 12 20:47:13 2004 From: nkras at visi.com (Neal Krasnoff) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:29 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Airport Management Tools Message-ID: http://download.info.apple.com/Mac_OS_X/061-1087.20040419.AptmG/2Z/AirPortMa nagementTools.dmg Neal: nkras at visi dot com _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From sulrich at botwerks.org Sun May 16 20:01:12 2004 From: sulrich at botwerks.org (steve ulrich) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:29 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] administravia: oreilly and assoc. newsletter Message-ID: <20040517010112.GA4821@botwerks.org> all- attached is the most recent iteration of the ORA newsletter. -- steve ulrich sulrich@botwerks.org PGP: 8D0B 0EE9 E700 A6CF ABA7 AE5F 4FD4 07C9 133B FAFC -------------- next part -------------- ================================================================ O'Reilly UG Program News--Just for User Group Leaders May 13, 2004 ================================================================ -Need Expo Hall Passes for Macworld in Boston July 13-15? -Want to Use the Perl Camel on Your User Group Site? -Put Up an O'Reilly Open Source Convention Banner, Get a Free Book ---------------------------------------------------------------- Book Info ---------------------------------------------------------------- ***Review books are available Copies of our books are available for your members to review-- send me an email and please include the book's ISBN number on your request. I never got an answer so I will ask again. What kind of coverage does the park have, and how does one gain access to the network. Thanks a bunch! -Erik Hanson _______________________________________________ Twin Cities Wireless Users Group Mailing List - Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota http://www.tcwug.org tcwug-list@tcwug.org https://mailman.real-time.com/mailman/listinfo/tcwug-list From kaze0010 at umn.edu Tue May 25 23:17:07 2004 From: kaze0010 at umn.edu (Haudy Kazemi) Date: Tue Jan 18 11:34:29 2005 Subject: [TCWUG] Loring Park Network Message-ID: <200405260417.i4Q4H70u011209@firefox.software.umn.edu> Well, basically when you are in the park look for SSID 'TCWUG'. Use your wireless card's program or WinXP's wireless config utility to choose TCWUG. Once you get an IP address, try to surf and then an agreement page will come up. Agree to it and the net is yours. Coverage isn't everywhere in the park, so try moving around and possibly out from under trees. Using a mini-PCI Dell Truemobile 1150 wireless card, I was barely able to get a signal from the TCWUG network when I was parked a little up the hill from Joe's Garage. A better or higher power wireless card might have worked better for me. Would there be any issues with them using this network? Is there a member of the group that has experience with the TCWUG network that I could talk to about specifics? Thanks all, I appreciate it. -Erik > We tested it at the last TCWUG meeting, and the connection was great near > the gardens in the center of the park.
